Welcome to the AI for Work: Foundations for Professional Productivity

This course provides a structured introduction to artificial intelligence within contemporary professional environments. It combines core design and problem solving principles with AI supported workflows, preparing learners for contexts where AI is part of daily tasks and decision making. As these systems become embedded in human performance, the focus is on practical use with clear intent and control.

How can artificial intelligence support thinking, productivity, and everyday work? This course approaches that question through a human centered lens. Students examine how AI systems operate at a conceptual level and develop the ability to work effectively with tools such as ChatGPT, emphasizing prompt design, evaluation of outputs, and responsible use.

Learning Outcomes

This course follows a structured progression that introduces artificial intelligence within contemporary professional contexts. It combines problem-solving and decision-making approaches with AI-supported workflows, preparing learners to use these systems effectively in everyday tasks. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain core concepts of contemporary artificial intelligence and describe the factors driving its rapid adoption.
  • Analyze the capabilities and limitations of AI systems, including common risks such as bias, inaccuracy, and overreliance.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate AI tools, including chat-based platforms, based on task requirements and constraints.
  • Apply AI tools to practical tasks across personal, professional, and business contexts using effective prompting strategies.
  • Design and refine prompts that translate general ideas into precise, goal-oriented instructions.
  • Critically assess AI-generated outputs for accuracy, relevance, bias, and reliability.
  • Demonstrate ethical, responsible, and human-centered use of AI in diverse contexts.

Session 1 – Understanding AI: What It Is and Why It Matters Now

This session introduces students to artificial intelligence from a human-centered perspective. Students explore what AI is, what it is not, and why it has become such an important part of everyday life and work. The goal is to build shared language, reduce uncertainty, and establish a clear foundation for the rest of the course.

Core Topics:

  • What artificial intelligence is and is not
  • Why AI adoption has accelerated in recent years
  • AI in everyday life, work, and organizations
  • Human performance and AI as a supportive tool
  • AI chats and how they work

Hands-On Activity

AI Awareness Mapping

Students identify and discuss AI systems they encounter in daily life or at work, and reflect on how these tools influence decision-making, productivity, or creativity.

AI for Work

This course will start on Saturday, June 13th, 2026
from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm ET

Session 2 – How AI Works: Capabilities, Limits, and Ethics

This session provides a clear, non-technical explanation of how generative AI systems work, alongside an introduction to their strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations. Students begin working directly with a chat-based AI tool to connect theory with experience.

Core Topics:

  • How generative AI works at a conceptual level
  • What AI can do well and where it fails
  • Hallucinations, accuracy, and reliability
  • Ethics, bias, privacy, and environmental impact

Hands-On Activity

Guided ChatGPT Exploration

Students interact with a chat-based AI tool using instructor-guided prompts to ask questions, request explanations, and observe how the system responds. Students reflect on strengths, weaknesses, and ethical considerations.

Session 3 – AI Tools and Platforms: Making Informed Choices

This session introduces the broader AI ecosystem and helps students understand the differences between popular chat-based platforms. Students learn how to choose tools based on needs, context, cost, and use case.

Core Topics:

  • Overview of chat-based AI tools
  • Differences between ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini
  • Free versus paid tools and cost considerations
  • Using AI on desktop and mobile devices

Hands-On Activity

Tool Comparison Exercise

Students complete or observe the same task using two different AI tools and compare the outputs, usability, and limitations, focusing on informed and responsible tool selection.
